Community Safety and Well-Being Plan
The Community Safety and Well-being Plan (CSWB Plan) outlines a comprehensive action plan to foster a sense of safety, belonging, and well-being in the community. The plan focuses on increasing community vitality by expanding volunteer programs, enhancing access to recreation and cultural services, and reaching out to isolated residents, particularly in underserved areas like Seaton. It emphasizes creating safe and welcoming neighborhoods by improving infrastructure such as security cameras, lighting, pedestrian crosswalks, and public spaces while promoting initiatives like community cleanups and public art to build pride and inclusion.
Education and collaboration are central to the plan, with training opportunities for residents and City staff on community safety, health, financial literacy, and inclusivity. Partnerships with regional providers will make services like health care, shelter programs, and social support more accessible. Efforts to promote physical and mental wellness include expanding community gardens, advocating for health care access, and ensuring inclusivity in public spaces through audits and adjustments to policies, such as gender-neutral spaces and resources for diverse needs.
Addressing basic needs is also a priority, with provisions for warming and cooling shelters, shower access, wellness checks, and urban agriculture initiatives to promote food security. The plan also focuses on improving living standards through affordable housing strategies, supporting regional homelessness initiatives, and creating employment opportunities via economic development and job fairs.
Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) are woven throughout the plan, with a commitment to enhancing accessibility, supporting marginalized communities, and creating safer, more inclusive spaces. The City is committed to advance reconciliation and inclusion.
Why Are We Doing This?
The CSWB Plan was developed to create a more resilient and connected Pickering. By identifying community needs and working with local partners, we aim to address root causes of safety and well-being challenges, ensuring meaningful and lasting change.
