Why is this facility needed?
This project is guided by the City of Pickering's Cultural Strategic Plan, which sets the vision for the place of arts, culture, and heritage in the community, and identifies strategic direction for policy, investment, partnerships, and programs.
This new facility will help connect people and communities by sharing and celebrating diverse pasts and bright future through programming and events, and allow the Museum to operate year-round, increasing access to these meaningful services.
Where will the Pickering Heritage & Community Centre be located?
#1 marks the location of the Pickering Heritage & Community Centre.
Will the Museum remain open during construction?
During construction, the Pickering Museum Village, located on the lower site of the property, will remain open. Vehicular traffic can enter the site via Gate #3 from Greenwood Road.
Will this new facility replace any of the Library facilities?
No, the Pickering Heritage & Community Centre will not be replacing any of the existing Library facilities. Instead, it will include unique spaces dedicated to the Library, the Local History Resource Centre (which will replace the existing 'Local History Room' located at the Central Library) and the Library Kiosk (which will offer Library services to citizens).
What is the total cost of the project?
The total project cost is estimated to be $64,672,456. To support construction, the City received $12.5M in funding from Infrastructure Canada's Green & Inclusive Community Buildings Program, and $4M from the Department of Canadian Heritage's Canada Cultural Spaces Fund.
