Pickering Museum Village seeks community input on the upcoming ‘Roots to Rebellion’ exhibit, featuring content on early Black History and the 1837 Rebellion of Upper Canada. The exhibit will explore the perspective of Black persons in the early 1800s, during movements such as the Abolition of Slavery in the British Empire, the Underground Railroad, and the 1837 Rebellion. We would like to include contemporary voices and learning approaches to create meaningful exhibit content.

During this period, we welcome you to view the PDF exhibit plan, which details the activities and content goals of the exhibit. PDF is in the right

Schedule

This consultation study will be undertaken from December 2022 to June 2023 to seek community input on the exhibit’s featured Black history content. The 3 phases of the consultation are below:

  • Phase 1 – December 19, 2022 to February 10, 2023. Let's Talk page is open
  • Phase 2 – February 10 to 28, 2023. Information analysis and reporting
  • Phase 3 – March 1 to June 30, 2023. Feedback sessions

In Phase 1 of the consultation, community responses will be gathered from:

  • forum responses (Let’s Talk Pickering)
  • notes taken during meetings (phone, virtual, or in-person)
  • recommendations during committee meetings and delegations

In Phase 2, responses will be summarized in a report that details the scope of the consultation. These responses frame a recommendation on how to proceed with community engagement during the exhibit text, activity design, and graphics drafting part of exhibit development.

In Phase 3 of the consultation project, recommendations and findings will be then shared with PABRT and the Cultural Advisory Committee, and with internal Cultural Services staff that are directly involved with the exhibit’s creation.

Interested parties will be contacted to provide feedback on content, final panels, teaching resources, and how the overall exhibit experience matches the consultation’s findings.
