My Father My Survivor

My Father is 75. He is a residential school survivor. He survived 6 years of sexual and physical abuse. He received 10 thousand dollars in 1994 for his pain and suffering. He is an alcoholic and has never been able to live independently. I have been his caretaker for 30 years. His PTSD will never go away. The trickle down effect is real and effects us all. I am glad he survived or my children and I would not be here. I am so proud of him.

Reflection on July 1 and Beyond

Hearing about the lost children from Catholic residential schools is absolutely soul crushing. This news is in addition to my beginning understanding about the mistreatment and lasting generational suffering Indigenous people have endured from their connections to residential schools. The magnitude of the situation is impossible to imagine. The layers of repercussions of these archaic decisions hit like waves. I’ll start by reflecting on July 1 and moving forward I’ll continue to seek ways to support the First Nations community.
