Community Climate Adaptation Plan
The City of Pickering is developing its first Community Climate Adaptation Plan (CCAP) to help community members prepare for, and adapt to, extreme weather-related events. These include:
- high-heat days
- floods
- severe windstorms
- power outages
- air pollution caused by wildfires
Goals & Objectives
- Help the City of Pickering, residents, organizations, community groups, businesses, places of worship, and vulnerable populations understand the impacts of climate change, and work together to increase Pickering's climate resiliency.
- Gain support and build a shared sense of ownership in the development of Pickering's Community Climate Adaptation Plan.
What has the City done to help the community adapt to a changing climate?
The City has been proactively integrating climate resiliency through existing Council-endorsed programs, plans, and policies. This includes plans such as the Integrated Sustainable Design Standards, Corporate Energy Management Plan, Amendment 23 to the Pickering Official Plan, Stormwater Management Design Guidelines, and the draft Community and Safety Well-Being Plan. In addition, the City has undertaken other actions that help during weather-related emergencies such as:
- warming and cooling centres at City facilities;
- naturalization projects;
- shade structures and splash pads;
- waterfront restoration; and
- sharing weather alerts and service disruptions.
By developing a Community Climate Adaption Plan, the City can work towards further improving its climate resiliency.
