In January 2025, the Federal Government announced that the Pickering Airport Lands will no longer be used for a future airport. To determine the future use of these lands, the Federal Government is seeking input from all levels of government, the local community and the public. As a result, the City of Pickering is conducting a comprehensive Land Use Review and Economic Analysis as input into the consultation and to assist the Federal Government in determining the future use of the Pickering Federal Lands.
In 1972, the Government of Canada acquired 75 km2 (18,600 acres) of land to develop a new airport northeast of Toronto in the municipalities of Pickering, Markham and Uxbridge, Ontario. The Pickering Federal Lands are located on the west side of Pickering, just north of Highway 407, Highway 7, and Seaton.
Approximately 40 square kilometres (9,900 acres) of land have been transferred to Parks Canada to further expand the adjacent Rouge National Urban Park. To date, the Federal Government retains 3,700 hectares (9,300 acres) of these lands which is generally leased for agricultural, residential and commercial uses.
