First called Norwood, the village became Greenwood when Fredrick Green bought and operated the local mill. Green added an additional mill, a creamery and was also Justice of the Peace. Early township meetings for Pickering and Whitby were held in Greenwood in 1801. John Diefenbaker, the 13th prime minister of Canada, attended Greenwood School where his father was the school master. The Pickering Village Museum is located in Greenwood and is the largest history museum in Durham Region with 18 heritage buildings.
