In 2003 the City established a Traffic Calming Policy as part of the “Safer Streets Traffic Management Strategy”. The Traffic Calming Policy is used to assist City staff with the management of requests for traffic calming measures. The purpose of this project is to update the Traffic Calming Policy based on industry best practices and guidelines and establish a process to proactively implement traffic calming in new subdivisions.

The new Neighbourhood Traffic Calming Measures Guidelines that will be developed through this project will set out:

• a transparent, standardized process for assessing and responding to citizen requests for traffic calming
• the method and criteria to identify and prioritize locations for traffic calming measures on local, collector and Type C Arterial roads under the jurisdiction of the City of Pickering

In Pickering, traffic calming measures may be considered on local, collector, and minor arterial roads. Traffic calming measures guidelines are not considered on major arterial roads, as these road classifications are intended to accommodate higher traffic volumes and support the efficient movement of people, vehicles, and goods. Traffic calming measures guidelines are also not considered on Regional Roads within the City, as these roads are under the jurisdiction of Durham Region.
