  • Share Hello, I’ve seen lots of advertising for fire blankets such as Prepared Hero. I was wondering if this type of product is better than a fire extinguisher as they advertise. I’m thinking it might be good to have handy in the kitchen in particular but would be very interested in your thoughts and recommendations. Fire blankets are an additional piece of fire safety that can be used within the home, but they should not replace a fire extinguisher. If you ever have a pot on the stove catch fire, we recommend that you use a tight-fitting lid to smother the fire, and then turn off the heat to the element. If purchasing a fire blanket, we recommend that you put it in a location that is easily accessible.

What type of fire tools and equipment is used for Pickering Fire Department

    Brianna asked 10 months ago

Pickering Fire has a large variety of tools and equipment, depending on the type of situation. For suppression activities, our main tools include our fire truck, which allows us to get water, the house, and nozzle, to spray the water onto the fire. We use a variety of tools from hydraulics to small hand tools. We also have equipment for water, ice, high angle, and vehicle rescues.

Fire extinguishers for home use are good for approximately 10 years. The date can be found in a few locations - some are stamped on the bottom of the cylinder, and others have the date written on the label!

Thank you for your question, and more importantly, thank you making fire safety a priority in your home. The reason your smoke alarm did not activate could be for a number of reasons.

    1. It may have been the proximity of where the smoke alarm is located in relation to the smoke and where it travelled.
    2. The amount of smoke may have dissipated by the time it reached the smoke alarm.
    3. The detector may require cleaning due to dust and/or debris.

If your smoke alarms are testing correctly when you push the button, then you can be assured they are operational. I would suggest that in addition to monthly testing, you vacuum the outside of your smoke alarms on a regular basis, as the protective grill can accumulate dust and debris.

Please remember that most smoke alarms have a maximum life expectancy of 8-10 years, and then need to be replaced.

If you still feel that there may be a problem with your smoke alarms after trying these solutions, feel free to call our Fire Prevention division at 905.839.9968 and we would be more than happy speak with you or visit your home to provide some direction.

    Thank you, and stay safe.
